Nadia Shmigel, United Nations Main Representative

The World Federation of Ukrainian Women's Organizations (WFUWO) was founded in November 1948 in the United States. It is an international federation of 23 non-profit organizations from 12 countries spanning four continents. The WFUWO supports cultural, educational, humanitarian and social programs, and advocates the advancement of the status of women, their families and children. WFUWO upholds the principles of political and religious tolerance, and universal human rights.

Much of WFUWO’s focus is on Eastern Europe and child victims of Chornobyl. WFUWO works closely with and maintains communications with other international organizations and the UN community on projects of common interests. The World Federation of Ukrainian Women's Organizations is a non-governmental organization in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations and with UNICEF.

WFUWO and member organizations’ activities include:

  • raising funds for and administering scholarship programs for children in less developed countries, including Eastern Europe and South America;
  • providing medication, vitamins, food, clothing and medical equipment for the victims of natural and human-caused disasters, e.g. victims of the Chornobyl nuclear meltdown;
  • supplying materials, supplies, clothing, healthcare products, food and vitamins to schools and orphanages;
  • establishing pre-school centers for children of working women;
  • conducting seminars and workshops for the advancement of equal rights for women in our society and thus stimulating women's interest in self-improvement and development;
  • addressing the most current human rights violation: the trafficking of women and children throughout the world;
  • publishing a quarterly magazine "Ukrainian Woman in the World" in English and Ukrainian that includes articles about the work and programs of the United Nations and its support systems as they pertain to issues dealing with women, children, families and the environment.

The WFUWO is headed by a President, Executive Members, a Board of Directors representing member organizations, and Standing Committees.

Officers are elected for a 5-year term at a World Congress of the WFUWO. In addition, annual and regional conferences are held to review progress, discuss issues and plan strategies.
